Dog treats have come a long way in terms of their nutritional benefits in recent years and the superfood ingredients in these New Zealand made treats not only taste great; they support the health and wellbeing of your best friend.
So what are these superfood ingredients and how do they support your dog’s health and vitality?
Blueberries are rich in antioxidants which help prevent cell damage. They’re also a good source of fibre and contain phytochemicals which have a protective effect at a cellular level, and help naturally preserve these treats.
Paprika is an antioxidant-rich spice that contains carotenoids which are beneficial for eyesight. These colourful carotenoids are converted to vitamin A which supports vision and vitamin E which is good for the skin.
Rich in natural omega-3 fatty acids, mackerel can help improve your dog’s skin and coat. This oily fish is also rich in antioxidants and collagen which supports joint and bone health, especially in older dogs.
Beef and Lamb
Meaty ingredients like beef or lamb are a good source of protein, and help your dog grow muscle tissue. It also contains fats, vitamins and minerals which contribute to the many internal processes (called ‘metabolism’) which keeps your dog healthy.
Venison provides a good source of protein and fats as well as vitamins and minerals including zinc, phosphorous and iron. Venison is a ‘novel’ protein for many dogs, making it a good option for those with sensitivities to other protein sources.
Green Lipped Mussels
Every New Zealander is aware that green lipped mussels are uniquely Kiwi, found living naturally on the east coast of the country. Green lipped mussels contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosatetranoic acid (ETA) which at high enough doses play a role in reducing inflammation and alleviating chronic skin disease and osteoarthritis.1 While EPA and DHA also occur in fish, ETA is unique to green lipped mussels. Green lipped mussels also contain chondroitin and antioxidant nutrients such as selenium, vitamin C and E.
Deer Velvet Powder
New Zealand is the largest producer of deer velvet powder in the world. It is derived from the growing antler of deer before the antler hardens and ‘calcified’. The velvet is rich in nerves and blood vessels.
This ingredient contains bone-building proteins, anti-inflammatory compounds, and other nutrients that may help rebuild weakened joint cartilage and strengthen teeth and bones. Some of the naturally occurring properties include essential amino acids, minerals including selenium, plus chondroitin and collagen.
Kiwifruit contains antioxidants, potassium, vitamins and minerals. These include Vitamin A, C, E and K which support vision, skin health and the immune system. Kiwifruit also contains fibre, flavonoids and carotenoids; antioxidants which can help protect the cells, stimulate rejuvenation, and strengthen the immune system.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Produced by the fermentation of apples, apple cider has been used traditionally as a home remedy. Both animal and human studies show that apple cider vinegar may contribute to a range of health benefits. Containing potassium and trace amounts of vitamins and minerals, this vinegar has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. Other benefits of apple cider vinegar include promoting health skin and coat, improving digestion and relieving itchy skin.2
Produced from the pollination of Manuka plants which are native to both New Zealand and Australia, Manuka honey is unique compared to regular honey because it contains a high level of ‘methyl glyoxal’. A growing body of evidence supports its benefits both topically and orally. With reported antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties, Manuka honey can assist the immune system, wound healing and provides prebiotic support for optimal gut health. It’s also rich in antioxidants which help slow ageing and cell damage.
Vegetable Glycerine is derived from plant oils. It is used in these treats as a humectant which means it helps maintain the water content and a more texture that dogs love. It also helps preserve the treats and has a naturally sweet taste, making it all the more delicious to dogs.
Coconut oil contains fatty acids which help improve cognitive ability, skin and coat condition and supports healthy digestion, aiding nutrient absorption. It has also been said to help alleviate arthritis, improve bone health and metabolic function. Coconut Oil is made up of saturated fat, and is high in medium chain triglycerides. These are the “good-fats” which are packed full of health benefits.
